Project Summary
The project Italian-Hungarian bilingual programs and Italian as a foreign language in Hungarian public education: Teaching material development and innovation (acronym: PRO-MATED) aims to improve the teaching of Italian in Hungarian public education, with a special focus on Italian–Hungarian bilingual programs.
Within the project, secondary school teachers and experts will collaborate on the development of modern teaching materials (textbooks, digital resources, glossaries), which are much needed both in Italian–Hungarian bilingual institutions and in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language. In addition, the project will launch professional networking and the collection of best practices to promote the spread of modern didactic methods.
The project focuses primarily on designing specialised teaching materials for Italian–Hungarian bilingual education. Another key outcome will be the development of a new multi-volume Italian textbook (A1–B2 levels), including the manuscript of the first volume and sample chapters for the following levels. Testing these materials with students will ensure the effectiveness of the proposed methodological solutions.

The Methodology Centre is a pioneer in the development and use of e-learning and MOOC materials, with internationally recognized innovations. The programs of the Faculty of Humanities at ELTE primarily train secondary school language teachers, but graduates also successfully find employment in language schools and adult education.

With more than eighty years of history, Újbuda József Attila Secondary School is one of the leading high schools in the Buda region, providing high-quality education in 17 classes. The school’s main profile is foreign language education: in addition to English, students can learn Spanish, French, Italian, and German, often with the involvement of native-speaking teachers. Students can participate in intensive language preparatory programs and study their chosen languages with an increased number of lessons, preparing them for language exams and advanced-level secondary school leaving exams. The school’s students regularly achieve outstanding results in national Italian language competitions and in the finals of the National Secondary School Academic Competition (OKTV). The institution also maintains close cooperation with Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), where it provides practical training opportunities for teacher trainees.
